Knowing your budget and what you can get for it will help you choose your watch. At Goldsmiths, we're proud to stock an extensive range of quality watches, both online and in our nationwide showroom network. Prices start at around £50 and go up to over £20,000.

Under £250

Fashion brands such as Armani, DKNY, Michael Kors, Olivia Burton and Vivienne Westwood have a large range of stylish, well made watches for under £150, but expect to pay more if you want your watch set with diamonds.

Around £500

It's also worth remembering that some of the more accessible Swiss watch brands offer watches for around the £500 mark, such as Tissot and Raymond Weil. And if you're looking for a bit of sparkle in this price range, check out Citizen and Tissot's range of crystal and diamond-set ladies' watches.

Over £1000

If you have a four-figure budget, you can start to look at watches produced by the traditional Swiss luxury watch brands. Rolex, TAG Heuer, Omega, Longines and Breitling are all hugely popular, but expect to pay more for them. Why? Because they often use hand-crafted mechanical movements; they're made with top quality, sometimes precious, materials; they're quality products made by brands with years of experience; and because they're designed to last for generations, provided you look after them (read our section on maintaining your watch).

Tip: when two very different watches have a similar price point, check to see what kind of movements they have - mechanical movements tend to make a watch more expensive, meaning you often get more functions at a lower price on a quartz watch.
