Diving Into The Panerai Submersible

By Amanda Evans | 5 minute read

SUBMERSIBLE

Giovanni Panerai made an entrance into the world of horology following the opening of Orologeria Svizzera, a watchmaking school which also offered the sale and servicing of superior pocket watches. It wasn’t until the early 20th Century, when the Italian watch house became recognised for supplying dive watches to the Italian Navy. Renowned for its distinguishing skills in mechanical engineering, in particular those celebrated techniques that made its watch numerals and indexes glow, Panerai’s relationship with the sea and diving was to become the launch pad for its future success as a luxury Italian watch brand.

In 2019 Panerai differentiated its watches by streamlining them into four key collections, the symbolic Luminor, the more graceful Luminor Due, the historic Radiomir and the robust Submersible. This welcome move helped distinguish the Submersible as Panerai’s professional dive watch collection.

Similar in style to the Luminor, the Submersible has a highly recognisable crown lock mechanism which stands out from the emblematic cushion shaped case. However, a key differentiator of the Submersible is its unidirectional rotating bezel, necessary for measuring time underwater and ultimately supporting the safety of a diver whilst exploring the depths. Essentially the Panerai Submersible collection represents strength underwater. With an unrivalled visibility even at great depths, the Submersible embraces the history of the brand with its roots firmly cemented in the sea, yet looks forward to the future, embracing new technology and empowering divers with new innovations that further enhance the user experience.

Throughout the Submersible’s period of innovation, a variety of materials have been utilised in the production of its cases. We have seen the more traditional high-specification materials such as titanium and AISI 316L stainless steel, the beauty of red gold, the popularity of bronze with its enviable patina and the pioneering and innovative BMG-TECH™ and Carbotech™, the latter being an incredible metallic glass with remarkable external shock resistance and anti-corrosion properties. In addition, all new Submersible watches are powered by automatic movements with an impressive 3-day power reserve and the majority are water-resistant to 300 metres. With such an array of pioneering interpretations together with its powerful aesthetic, it is easy to see how the Panerai Submersible is the watch of choice for the professional diver.

Register your interest for this NEW model with a compelling aesthetic

The 42mm AISI 316L brushed steel case cushions a striking white dial. The dial features luminous hour markers and dots along with a date window at 3 o’clock and small seconds dial at 9 o’clock. This poses a dramantic aesthetic contrast against the Caoutchouc Black rubber strap. Housing automatic mechanical P900 calibre, a 3-day power reserve and water resistance to 300 metres.

Not only known for their innovation of materials, but colours too. The white dial is a bold but welcome addition to the Submersible collection. At an entry price point within this collection, it’s a great addition for 2021. Lisa Broun, Senior Watch Buyer
