Each year the trend of coloured gemstone jewellery never fails to be on the list. The only difference that we have seen is the introduction of lesser-known gemstones, or a colour palette of pastel hues that diversifies from the expectation of a vivid palette of sapphires, rubies, and emeralds.

Valued for their rarity and durability, and their undeniable beauty, sapphires, rubies, and emeralds have been coveted for centuries by royalty and religious leaders. Along with diamonds, they are renowned as the most precious and sought-after gemstones. Their value and beauty have rendered them significant symbols of wealth and power and, although this premise still exists, our innate quest for broadening the spectrum of colour within our jewellery wardrobes has led us to seek equally beautiful gemstones such as morganite, tanzanite, pink sapphires, and more. But where do you start when choosing a coloured gemstone to suit you? Is there even such a thing as the ‘perfect colour’?

We spoke with Tanya McMillan, Personal Stylist and specialist in colour analysis, who shared her expertise in colour psychology and embracing your true authentic self…

What Is colour analysis and how does it work?

Having qualified at the London College of Style in 2019, one of the areas I specialise in is colour analysis. Discovering your true colours can be truly transformational. Wearing the correct shades for your skin tone will impact how you look and feel, potentially taking years off you and giving you that radiance and sparkle. I am passionate about finding my clients’ true colours that will bring harmony to the face, lift their mood, and enhance wellbeing.

How do you find the happy medium between the colours that suit your skin tone, the colours that suit your personality, and the colours that represent the type of person you aspire to be?

This is where style, personality, individual taste, and lifestyle all come into play and fit in together – this will help you shine as your true authentic self.

Is there a colour that suits everyone and if so, what colour is it?

Anyone can wear any colour and I am always very clear about that. It is the specific shade that we are talking about with colour analysis. There is such a big difference on the skin when looking at a light yellow-green peridot compared to an intense and dramatic emerald for example.

How does colour impact our mood?

Without a doubt, colour has a psychological effect on the brain. We all know how our spirits are lifted on a bright sunny day. The right colours can stimulate, enhance, inspire, or calm us. Greys and blacks can often bring those unwanted gloomy vibes! We want to feel as energetic, productive, and as positive as possible and wearing our wow colours will do exactly that.

What key guidelines would you suggest people stick to when choosing a coloured gemstone?

The most important thing is to simply choose what you absolutely love! But consider how it will fit in with other pieces in your collection, how and when you intend to wear it, what that colour might signify for you and what message you want to project. Colour psychology has become a huge part of colour analysis – colours can make you feel creative, sentimental, emotional, and uplifted. Project the message that you want and be the best version of yourself.

How do you choose coloured gemstone jewellery to gift?

Think about the occasion and the lucky recipient. Do you have a message that you want to get across with the gift? What are the words that spring to mind when you think of that? Love, compassion, luxury, loyalty, growth, health, passion, excitement…

If colour is a language, what does sapphire say about an individual?

When I think of sapphires, I’m thinking straight away of certain characteristics in a person such as calm, sincerity, integrity, and loyalty. Sapphires are often used as a central stone in an engagement ring which is a perfect expression of loyalty and love.

If colour is a language, how does Aquamarine speak to you?

In the language of gemstones aquamarine represents hope, happiness, and everlasting youth. The colour is associated with tranquility, serenity, clarity, and harmony.

How has the art of colour analysis changed the way you shop, if at all?

Massively! I know exactly which shades work best for me and my skin tone to ensure I look as healthy and radiant as possible and which hues I need to stay away from if I don’t want to look tired, dull, and drained!

How will knowing my colours help influence the jewellery purchases I make?

Being confident about whether you have a warm or cool skin tone will help you an awful lot in terms of the metal choice, but it will also make you think about colour psychology, wow shades and messages when it comes to gemstones too.

Do our colours change? How do we choose jewellery that is timeless, such as bridal jewellery?

No, your skin tone will not change from the day you’re born to the day you die. The texture, colour, and elasticity of your skin of course will! When it comes to special occasion pieces, everyone is so very different. A statement jewellery piece for one person might be something to wear every day for the next person. If it’s your wedding day, I would consider the venue, the dress, the ambiance, the mood and most importantly your individual taste and style personality when making your choices. And that’s why it’s brilliant that there are so many amazing pieces available at Goldsmiths. We all want to shine successfully in our own way, and we are most certainly spoilt for choice here!
