MORE IS MORE

November 18, 2020

Not so long ago, having multiple piercings was seen as a bit ‘alternative’, but in 2020 the ear-stacking trend has definitely crossed over into the mainstream. Now everyone from Charlize Theron to Beyoncé has been accessorising with layers of huggies, studs and hoops – after all, it’s the perfect way to add a bit of extra sparkle.

And whether mixing and matching sets of earrings or combining a line of stunning single pieces, there are many ways to curate your perfect look. Mixing metals, stone cuts and precious gems is an ideal way to add interest to an outfit. And with the increase in popularity of piercings such as a ‘seconds’, positioned just slightly above the traditional lobe placement and the helix, following the same outside line but on the top half of the ear, there are now even more ways to display your favourite earrings.

You might favour our Renee white-gold and diamond hoop earrings, £1,500, Mappin & Webb; or simple silver studs, such as these white-gold and diamond cluster earrings, £480, Goldsmiths; or these stunning and shapely white-gold and diamond marquise stud earrings, £850, Goldsmiths.

This form of layering could be seen as part of the more general fashion for maximalism over minimalism. Fashion writer Emily Dawes explains: ‘Dainty necklaces and simple hoop earrings are still being worn, especially for more formal settings like the office. But they’re now being layered up to suit your personality – perhaps bright and colourful stones that evoke holiday memories, or hoops that continue up the ears in various formations.’

A huggie or a small set of hoops are the perfect way to add subtle interest to a stack of earrings: check out our Roberto Coin’s Symphony white-gold and diamond hoop earrings, £1,620. Or our Carrington yellow-gold, ruby and diamond hoop earrings, £1,250, Mappin & Webb; and pair with our beautiful white-gold pearl cluster stud earrings, £550, Mappin & Webb.

As Emily says, ‘A jewellery box in 2020 should look like a treasure trove of pieces, mixed and matched to suit your mood, with the ability to take you from the boardroom to the beach.’

As well as being one of the latest jewellery trends, there is evidence that multiple ear piercings can even help aid medical ailments such as migraines, thanks to the ear having some 200 acupuncture points. For example, a daith piercing, which passes through the innermost cartilage fold of the ear, is commonly believed to ease anxiety-induced headaches and migraines. With these added benefits to piercings, why wear one earring when you could wear many?

The ear-stacking trend can be interpreted however you like, and whether adding a second earring is enough, or you’d prefer to stack ’em high, we have the perfect selection. From cool climbers (such as this yellow-gold climber stud, £650, Mappin & Webb), or small huggie hoops (like our yellow-gold huggie earrings, £65, Goldsmiths), we just can’t wait to help you tailor your collection. To shop our extensive collection of earrings, visit Mappin & Webb and Goldsmiths in-store or online.
