Famous for iconic jewellery worn throughout the decades by the most glamorous stars and royalty, it is easy to forget that Cartier is a pioneer watchmaker.
A house built on the foundations of a dynasty
Have you ever wondered what the allure of Cartier really is?
Its roots go back to 1847 and the unique and beautiful pieces Louis-François Cartier began manufacturing for French aristocrats and wealthy travellers in Paris.
Known as a French Maison, meaning French House, the Parisian Cartier boutique was truly one of a kind.
It became a global brand thanks to his three grandsons, Louis, Pierre and Jacque. Bold and creative, they sought worldwide inspiration for their grandfather’s business, taking Cartier to the next level.
Cartier’s first boutique was on New York’s 5th Avenue in 1909 – the result of an exchange of a pearl necklace for a $1m town house. Around this time, boutiques were also established in London and St Petersburg, and Cartier quickly became one of the most iconic brands in the world.
The first modern wristwatch
It was Cartier that produced the world’s first modern wristwatch in 1904. Brazilian aviation pioneer Alberto Santos-Dumont had bemoaned the unsuitably of a pocket watch when flying. The response was the ‘Santos’ – a flat wristwatch with a distinctive bezel and an innovative movement. Proving hugely popular, it heralded a new era in wristwatch design.
It still occupies this position today, and Cartier watches are worn by the likes of Michelle Obama and the Duchess of Cambridge. Cartier is proud that it doesn’t pay for such high society endorsements – its timepieces are worn entirely because of their quality.
